Loop Recorder Q & A

What is a loop recorder?

A loop recorder is an implantable medical device placed under your skin during an outpatient procedure. Following placement, the loop recorder monitors your heart’s electrical activity.

Cardiology Associates of Frederick uses loop recorders to detect various heart-related health problems, including:

  • Palpitations
  • A fast or slow heartbeat
  • Fainting
  • Abnormal heart rhythms that may trigger a stroke

Loop recorders last for up to three years. During that time, you regularly visit your doctor who downloads and assesses the recordings.

How do I prepare for loop recorder implantation?

Before undergoing a loop recorder procedure, your provider at Cardiology Associates of Frederick conducts a physical exam and reviews your health history. During the appointment, let your provider know about any medications or supplements you regularly take. In addition, alert them to any chronic health problems you’re living with.

After gathering the necessary information, your provider tells you how to prepare. Often, that means not eating or drinking anything at least 12 hours before the procedure.

What does loop recorder implantation involve?

Loop recorder implantation is a quick and pain-free process. On the day of the procedure, you change into a hospital gown and lie down on an exam table. Your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your skin and provides medication to help you relax.

Once you’re comfortable, your provider makes a small incision in the skin on the upper left side of your chest. They create a small pocket beneath your skin and insert the loop recorder into the pocket. After placing the loop recorder, your provider closes the incision and provides care instructions.

What is recovery like following loop recorder implantation?

Following loop recorder implantation, you’re moved to an observation room. When the anesthesia wears off, a friend or family member can drive you home. Take at least 24 hours to rest and recuperate. If you experience any bleeding or swelling at the surgical site, contact Cardiology Associates of Frederick right away.

Are loop recorders safe?

Yes. Loop recorders are safe and usually well-tolerated. They rarely cause problems or side effects. If you need to undergo an MRI for another issue, make sure the physician knows you have a loop recorder. That’s because they may cause the imaging device to display a false reading.
